DHIS2

DHIS2 is an open-source platform developed by HISP Centre at the University of Oslo, implemented with local HISP groups worldwide. For over 30 years, HISP has supported sustainable, locally-owned health information systems. Now used in 80+ countries, DHIS2 is implemented and supported by HISP Rwanda for Rwanda and 11 other countries.

DHIS2 In Action

Health

DHIS2 is the world’s leading Health Management Information System (HMIS), adopted by Ministries of Health in over 80 countries to manage routine health data across all levels — from community facilities to national systems. In addition to aggregate data collection, many countries also leverage DHIS2 for individual-level data, supporting functions such as patient tracking, case-based disease surveillance, immunization registries, and more.

Education

DHIS2 for Education expands the use of the DHIS2 platform beyond the health sector to support data-driven improvements in the education sector. It enables the collection, analysis, visualization, and use of both individual and aggregate data from learning institutions to enhance planning, monitoring, and equitable access to quality education.

Climate

In March 2024, the HISP Centre at the University of Oslo (HISP UiO) launched the DHIS2 Climate & Health Project, supported by the Wellcome Trust. One of the key outcomes of the project’s first phase was to review previous pilot initiatives that used DHIS2 to address climate and health challenges and to document how lessons learned from those pilots—as well as from the first year of the current project—have informed the development of new open-source tools for climate and health, shaped stakeholder engagement approaches, and guided strategies for scaling DHIS2-based climate and health systems in low- and middle-income countries.

Logistics

DHIS2 enhances supply chain visibility by integrating monthly or real-time logistics data from health facilities — or even directly from the point of care — with epidemiological and programmatic data. This integration strengthens demand planning for health commodities, improves the efficiency and effectiveness of supply chain operations, and enables performance monitoring to quickly identify gaps and inefficiencies.
