KARAME Enters Rwanda’s Top 10 Education Apps on Google Play Just Three Weeks After Launch

Just three weeks after its official launch on the Google Play Store, KARAME has rapidly emerged as one of Rwanda’s most impactful digital education tools, now ranking 7th among the Top 10 Education applications in Rwanda on Google Play.

The milestone reflects not only strong public adoption, but also the growing role of digital innovation in strengthening Rwanda’s education system and ensuring that no child is left behind.

In only a few weeks since launch, KARAME has already recorded:

  • More than 38,000 installs
  • Over 47,000 new devices reached
  • Rapid adoption across schools and education stakeholders nationwide

Developed and implemented by HISP Rwanda in collaboration with the Ministry of Education Rwanda (MINEDUC), Save the Children, Waliku, and HISP Mozambique (Saudigitus), KARAME was created to support Rwanda’s national efforts to reduce and prevent school dropout through real-time student attendance monitoring and data-driven decision-making.

The application is part of the broader Zero Out-of-School Children (Zero OOSC) initiative launched by MINEDUC alongside the Education Above All Foundation and Save the Children Rwanda. The initiative aims to reintegrate approximately 177,000 children into the country’s education system while ensuring they remain connected to learning.

A Digital Tool Built for Schools

KARAME is designed specifically for authorized school staff, including headteachers and teachers, enabling them to digitally track student attendance and participation in real time.

The platform helps schools quickly identify learners at risk of dropping out by monitoring attendance patterns and engagement indicators, allowing faster intervention and follow-up.

One of the application’s key strengths is its offline-first design, which allows schools to continue recording attendance and student data even in areas with limited or unstable internet connectivity. Once connectivity becomes available, the system securely synchronizes information with national education servers.

Core features of KARAME include:

  • Real-time student attendance tracking
  • Early identification of at-risk learners
  • Offline functionality with secure synchronization
  • Data integration with the national education ecosystem
More Than a Ranking

For project partners, the achievement goes far beyond app store rankings.

The rapid uptake of KARAME demonstrates increasing trust in locally implemented digital public infrastructure and highlights how technology can directly support education outcomes at scale.

The platform represents a shared commitment between government institutions, development partners, and technology implementers to improve visibility into student participation and strengthen follow-up mechanisms within schools and across the national education system.

As Rwanda continues investing in digital transformation across sectors, KARAME is already positioning itself as a practical example of how technology can help address real-world educational challenges.

At HISP Rwanda, the focus remains on building scalable, sustainable digital solutions that create measurable impact for communities and public institutions across the country. END
