March 24, 2026 Marks World Tuberculosis Day

Tuberculosis (TB) remains the world’s deadliest infectious disease, claiming an estimated 1.2 million lives in 2024. Despite being preventable and curable, TB continues to pose a serious public health threat worldwide. Addressing it requires innovation, access, and strong health systems.

At HISP Rwanda, we are committed to strengthening TB response through digital solutions, working closely with governments, communities, and partners to ensure that no one is left behind.

HISP Rwanda’s Impact Across Countries

🇩🇯 Djibouti – Strengthening TB and HIV Surveillance

HISP Rwanda proudly supported the official launch of the HIV/TB Tracker Program in Djibouti. Developed in collaboration with the Department of Health Information Systems (DIS) and the National HIV/TB Program, this DHIS2-based solution enables real-time tracking of HIV and TB cases.

By improving data management, reporting, and analysis, the program strengthens patient care and supports informed decision-making across the health system.

🇷🇼 🤝 🇹🇿 Rwanda & Tanzania – Supporting Treatment Adherence with Smart Pillboxes

In Rwanda and Tanzania, HISP Rwanda collaborates with the National Tuberculosis Program (NTP) of Rwanda, KNCV, and HISP Tanzania to improve treatment adherence for drug-resistant TB (DR-TB).

Through the use of smart pillboxes integrated with DHIS2, patients receive real-time reminders, and healthcare providers can monitor adherence remotely, improving treatment outcomes and patient support.

🇧🇮 Burundi – Digitizing TB Drug Resistance Surveillance

Burundi’s TB surveillance system has faced challenges, including gaps in screening, under-detection, and inefficient data collection. To address these, HISP Rwanda partnered with the Ministry of Public Health and AIDS Control (MSPLS) and Action Damien to digitize the TB Drug Resistance Survey (TB-DRS) using DHIS2.

This initiative has:

  • Improved data quality and completeness
  • Enabled real-time access to TB drug resistance trends
  • Strengthened evidence-based decision-making

The project enhances Burundi’s capacity to respond effectively to drug-resistant TB.

Chad Scaling TB Tracking Systems

Building on similar successful implementations, HISP Rwanda has deployed a TB Tracker system in Chad, aligned with solutions implemented in Djibouti and Rwanda.

This digital tool strengthens TB surveillance by enabling:

  • Real-time case tracking
  • Improved data quality and reporting
  • Better monitoring of patient care and outcomes

The deployment contributes to a more coordinated and data-driven national TB response

Ending TB requires strong health systems, quality data, and innovative solutions. HISP Rwanda continues to work with partners to leverage digital tools, enhance surveillance, and ensure that life-saving TB interventions reach the people who need them most.

Together, we can #EndTB.
