At the Africa HealthTech Summit 2026 in Kigali, two conversations stood out. In one, summit participants shared their views on data exchange and the future of digital health. In the other, experts argued for domestic health financing, local innovation and stronger Health Information Systems. Together, they show that Africa’s health future depends on investing in African solutions, strengthening health data systems, and turning resources into better health outcomes.

HISP Rwanda’s July–September 2026 quarter highlighted continued progress in digital health, capacity building, innovation and partnerships across Africa. From the DHIS2 Academy in Kigali, which brought together participants from 10 countries, to knowledge exchanges with partners from Chad, Guinea and Gabon, the quarter strengthened skills and collaboration around health data and digital systems.

HISP Rwanda also advanced digital solutions in Rwanda, including hospital accreditation, cancer surveillance and AI-powered health data analytics, while engaging with the wider HISP Africa community and the Africa HealthTech Summit. Together, these initiatives reflected HISP Rwanda’s commitment to sustainable digital transformation, stronger health information systems and better use of data for decision-making.

HISP Rwanda joined more than 5,600 delegates at the Africa HealthTech Summit 2026 in Kigali to explore how data, digital technologies, interoperability, and partnerships can strengthen health systems across Africa. Represented by CAR Portfolio Manager Amza Ndabateze, HISP Rwanda contributed to conversations on building intelligent, connected, and sustainable health systems that turn data into better decisions and improved healthcare services.
One of the notable sessions at the summit was “The Politics of Health and Agenda 2063,” featuring Dr. Mary Moussa, FAPH, and Prof. PLO Lumumba.

The session explored issues including political will, African agency, leadership, ownership, and the importance of African-led approaches in shaping the continent’s health future.

These discussions underscored that technology alone cannot transform health systems. Sustainable digital transformation also requires strong institutions, committed leadership, local ownership, effective partnerships, and continued investment in people and systems.

HISP Rwanda joined HISP Africa members, government representatives, development partners, and digital health stakeholders in Addis Ababa to strengthen collaboration, exchange knowledge, and advance sustainable digital transformation across Africa.

For HISP Rwanda, the convening provided an important platform to share experiences from Rwanda, learn from colleagues across the HISP Africa network, and contribute to conversations on the future of digital health, health information systems, surveillance, interoperability, and locally driven digital transformation.

The five-day convening brought together members of the HISP Africa network and partners from across the continent to exchange experiences, strengthen collaboration, explore emerging opportunities, and reflect on how digital technologies and data-driven systems can contribute to sustainable development and improved health outcomes in Africa.

What if you could ask DHIS2 a question in plain language and instantly receive a chart, table, and interpretation?

HISP Rwanda is exploring this possibility through HMIS Digest, a new AI application that brings natural-language interaction closer to DHIS2 health data. With a locally hosted AI option, the tool also takes data governance and sovereignty into consideration.

Early pilot testing has shown promising results while highlighting areas for further improvement, including query accuracy, visualization, and response time. This article explores what the application can do today, the lessons from the pilot, and the next steps toward making health data analysis simpler and more accessible.

Managing accreditation across dozens of hospitals once meant paper forms, delayed feedback, and fragmented data. The Rwanda Hospitals Accreditation Platform eliminates these bottlenecks by providing a unified digital system for real-time facility evaluations, instant automated scoring, and national-level performance analytics.

Depuis plus de dix ans, DHIS2 joue un rôle essentiel dans le renforcement du système d’information sanitaire au Sénégal. Son utilisation a notamment contribué à améliorer la collecte, l’analyse et l’utilisation des données dans plusieurs programmes de santé, en particulier dans le Programme National de Lutte contre la Tuberculose (PNT) et au niveau des districts sanitaires.

Pour la première fois, une délégation de l’Agence Nationale de Sécurité Sanitaire (ANSS) de Guinée a participé à l’Académie DHIS2 sur la Configuration de l’accès aux données et à l’analyse, organisée à Kigali par HISP Rwanda en collaboration avec l’Université d’Oslo. Cette formation a permis aux participants de renforcer leurs compétences dans l’utilisation de DHIS2, d’échanger avec des professionnels de plusieurs pays et d’acquérir des connaissances qui contribueront à améliorer la qualité des données et à soutenir une prise de décision fondée sur des données fiables au sein du système de santé guinéen. Parmi les participants figuraient Nestor Damey et M’Mahawa Soumah, représentants de l’ANSS de Guinée. Pour eux, cette première participation marque une étape importante dans leur parcours professionnel. Ils soulignent que cette académie leur a permis de découvrir davantage les possibilités offertes par DHIS2, d’acquérir de nouvelles compétences techniques et de mieux comprendre le rôle stratégique des données de santé dans la planification et le suivi des interventions sanitaires.

Au-delà des connaissances techniques, les deux participants mettent en avant la richesse des échanges avec les experts et les délégations venues de plusieurs pays africains. Cette diversité d’expériences a favorisé le partage de bonnes pratiques et renforcé leur vision de l’utilisation de DHIS2 comme un outil essentiel pour améliorer la qualité des données et soutenir des décisions fondées sur des informations fiables
